Hay
there is / there are
EXISTENCIA

Una sola forma para singular y plural. Va con un / una / unos / muchos… o sin artículo.

¿Qué hay en esa ciudad?
What is there in that city?
Why hay?
We're asking about the existence of things in general — we don't know if there are museums, parks, shops… We use hay to ask what exists there.
En Madrid hay muchos museos.
In Madrid there are many museums.
One form for singular & plural
Hay un museo and hay muchos museos — the verb never changes! Unlike English ("there is" / "there are"), Spanish always uses hay.
Ser
to be
DESCRIBIR

Para decir cómo es algo: características, origen, identidad.

¿Cómo es Berlín?
What is Berlin like?
Why ser?
We're asking about Berlin's characteristics — is it big, historical, modern…? These are permanent qualities that describe it. We use ser.
Soy de un pueblo pequeño.
I'm from a small town.
Origin = always ser
Your origin is part of your identity — it doesn't change. So we use ser: soy de España, eres de Londres. Never use estar for where you're from!
Estar
to be
LOCALIZACIÓN

Para decir dónde está algo concreto (un lugar, una persona, un edificio).

¿Dónde está Berlín?
Where is Berlin?
Why estar?
We're asking about location — where something is physically. Position on a map always uses estar, even though it's permanent.
El Prado está en el Paseo del Prado.
The Prado is on Paseo del Prado.
Buildings & places → estar
Specific locations always use estar for position: El Bernabéu está en Madrid. La Torre Eiffel está en París.
Cuatro preguntas para hablar de tu ciudad
